NEW DELHI: Senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra has said that MP Babubhai Katara has been suspended from the party.

Katara allegedly tried to take a woman to Canada on his wife’s passport.

BJP chief Rajnath Singh, who found the charges against the Gujarat MP serious, asked the party to obtain a full account of what had happened with him at the airport from official channels.

He told the party that tough action would be taken against him if the charges were authenticated by officials.

“If it’s all true, such a person can have no place in the party,” said BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar.

“This is quite a serious and sensitive matter,” added Javadekar.

Katara, who represents Dahod in the Lok Sabha, was detained by immigration officials when they found out that the woman who was travelling along with him on his wife’s passport was one Paramjeet Kaur and not his spouse Sarada Ben.

They were to board Air India flight 187 to Toronto, which was scheduled to depart at 7.30 a.m.

Immigration officials detained the two for questioning and later handed them over to the police.
